CALIFORNIA THROUGH MY EYES
I’ve been obsessed with Gotarrdo Piazzoni’s Murals, ‘The Sea’ and ‘The Land’, since I’ve seen them. Piazzoni speciallized in landscape painting with muted colors and was influenced by the flatness of Japanese woodblock printing. He sought out the lighting effects of certain times of day, taking a "special interest in full moonrises, the viewing of which became a family ritual. Venturing up a hill, the family would cheer the appearance of the moon. Piazzoni knew the exact time for each moonrise and kept precise records.” (1)
I felt like I could learn a great deal from Piazzoni’s use of shapes and color to create subtle shifts in my prints so I undertook these two prints to learn more about his style.
‘What We Will Miss (I&II)’ references the ever-changing landscape of California through climate change. These prints what I love about this landscape that I will always remember and dream of. A testament before they retreat into memory.
