Introducing my first print as owner of The Aesthetic Union!
I have been fascinated with how much viable real estate parking lots take up in our cities. I even made a map of almost all of them in the country in college and wrote an article about it for strong towns.
The parking supply in America exceeds the demand to a count of about 2 billion parking spots for almost 270 million registered vehicles in america. even though all retail, residential, and commercial developments require parking, no American city collects official data on its total supply.
Parking spaces are everywhere we turn, yet they are overlooked by mainstream press, tax assessors and citizens. there are profound geographic, social, economic, and environmental impacts owed to the ubiquity of parking. slowly, cities and states are beginning to pass laws which eliminate parking minimums.
This print reflects an incomplete dataset of San Francisco’s parking inventory, as none have been officially kept. what could our city look and feel like if we repurposed this prime real estate for a more productive use, and gave it back to the p e o p l e?
