A DEEP IMPRESSION
After practicing as a healthcare attorney in New York City, Marissa Geoffroy moved to San Francisco in 2014 to pursue her career as an artist. She completed her MFA at California College of the Arts (CCA) in May 2017. Geoffroy is a painter, photographer, and sculptor. She is a founding member of Borderline Art Collective and Collective Genus, groups that promote the arts and serve the broader community in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to her fine arts practice, Geoffroy is a commercial photographer and the Creative Director of Sherle Wagner International. She lives in the Outer Richmond with her husband, David, and their dogs, Kol and Kitti.
Geoffroy’s work is informed by spaces and architecture, by the transient nature of shadows, and by the ontological implications of human perception. Starting from photographs of personally significant structures, such as her childhood home, she deconstructs architectural imagery into more basic formal remnants. She reassembles the parts into new imagery, building something of her own from pieces of the original architecture. Her artistic process mimics the process of perception, in which the mind assembles stimuli of a perceived subject into an internal representation. The blind embossing of this piece results in a subtle image, which becomes more and less visible with the conditions of the surrounding light.
