TIME ELAPSES FROM THE PRESENT TO THE PAST

A many-layered block print of Tomales Bay in Marin County California, James chose to use a base of three panels inspired by traditional byōbu, or Japanese folding screens of the Han Dynasty (794–1185 CE). Recalling the use of these screens in Buddhist temples and the influence of Japanese culture on Northern California philosophy and crafts, such as Suzuki Roshi and Isamu Noguchi respectively. The title is a reference from a dharma talk, “Time elapses from present to past.” This is absurd, but in our practice, it is true (sometimes it is true)”

These prints were made using hand-carved linoleum blocks on a Vandercook letterpress from 1931
